Class 12 critique

Someone’s idea for the brain prosthetic project was to design something that would help the brain hear better. It was presented in illustrator. Something is implanted into your tooth that links to your brain to help you hear better. I think this is a good idea for the project. However, I think that it needs to be more complex. The idea is very complex and so the presentation needs to be more complex so that the idea and presentation go together evenly. It would be interesting to see more views, he accurately showed us the top and the side of the tooth. But what about the other areas or the inside? I think this idea is a very strong idea, but it does need work… but this is a two week project so we will see what he has next week.

I like this site because it is interactive. It moves wherever your mouse moves and the movement is smooth. I really like interactive websites, because they are entertaining. The content of this website is also cool, it is uniquely designed interiors. They unique designs go with the uniqueness of the website. The website is easy to browse through. It is easy to randomly choose a space, but they have also separated each space into years and categories so it is easy to find a specific space. I feel that the flash website is better than the content. The website is a fun, unique, and interactive way of presenting your work.

An object around my room that is well designed is my Mac book pro. It is an efficiently working computer that is encased in a sleek looking shell. Many makers of pc’s are not able to make laptops that look as pretty as apple’s computers. The Mac book pro has a simple design. It has a shiny screen that has high contrast between the bright colorful screen and the black border around the screen. It has a glass track pad, and there is nothing obtrusive. Apple has taken function and form to create a very efficient computer that is also well designed.

Class 7: Better Than Free

There are four things that can be better than free: trust, love, companionship, and community. The Internet copies everything that is done with it, and the copies are free. There are a few things that cannot be copied. Trust is an example of a quality that cannot be copied; nor can it be bought, trust has to be earned. Many people pay for things that will eventually be free, because they want them immediately. They want them as soon as they are available and are willing for pay for immediacy. People will also pay for personalization. Even if it is free, they will pay to have it personalized to fit them exactly the way they want it. Software is also free. But people do not know what to do with it, so they pay to have someone teach them or do it for them. People will also pay for authenticy. They may know how to download something for free, and know how to use it, but they are not sure if it is bug free, and of course they do not want a virus on their computer. Accessibility is something that people pay for. They are willing to pay a company do to everything; all they have to do is click a button. The company makes sure everything is backed up, they pay the creators, and gives the consumer everything they want. People pay for embodiment. They have a free digital version, but they always want more. They want it printed or in high resolution, so they pay more for that upgrade. The consumer will only pay if it is a reasonable amount, easy to do, and if they are certain their money will directly benefit the creators. People will also pay for findability. They want things that can be found, and sometimes, you have to pay for that. Although everything is free, there are some things other than qualities that are not free. People pay for convenience and personalization, and many other things. They pay for what they need and what will make their lives easier.

Walter Benjamin discusses what happens to art when it is reproduced. There is a difference between a painting and a video. Conventional art is uncritically enjoyed, while new art is criticized. When viewing a video, the public’s critical and receptive attitudes become one. This happens because people are affected by the large number of people around them and their reactions. One person or a few, not mass numbers of people, usually view a painting. Through the ages, only a few people have generally viewed paintings at a time. This has now changed with the ability to mechanically reproduce a painting. In museums and galleries, the masses of people are going to have to same response to a painting as they would to a video. When art is reproduced, it changes the reaction of the audience. People are influenced by the people around them. And when people surround them, they do not get a chance to make up their own mind about a painting or a piece of artwork. In a culture where the “sacred” in art vanishes, people will take art for granted. They will not appreciate a true original painting, why would they when they have a reproduction.

I love this website because it is a unique take on something that we do not normally appreciate. We do not normally examine the packaging of things that we buy. This website is devoted to showing new and unique designs for packaging, from student to professional works. The website also displays the images in a reader friendly way. It is a simply an image with a short summary underneath and the option to read more about the product. They put all of the new designs on the home page. The website allows you to search for a specific design, or you can browse older designs by category. The website takes unique designs and shows them in a simple organized way.

My designs all refer to being at art school.

The first design was created in photoshop. It resembles the idea that I came up with for the design.

The second design is an image of why we are here. We are here to create art, and that is what the image is of. It was created in illustrator.

The third design simply states “don’t touch my project”. Here at art school, we work hard on our work, and we do not want it to get ruined by the carelessness of fellow students. It was created in illustrator.
